Holly Bleasdale has had a great month so far. Starting off by winning in Moscow with a Vault of 4.75m, she followed this up on the 9th Feb with a world leading vault of 4:77m at the British European Indoor Trials & Championships in Sheffield. Holly then went to Birmingham (British Athletics Grand Prix) the week after and won again with a Vault of 4:70m. Added to these competitions are competitions in Poland on 12th Feb (2nd with 4:50m) and equal 4th in Sweden with 4:45m on 21st February. A great month for Holly.
Luke Evans had a busy weekend at the Championships. Having recently recorded two new Club Records for the Senior Men (60m in 7.00sec & (21.76secs for the 200m), Luke was entered in the 60m and 200m. In his first 60m Heat, he ran 2nd in a time of 7.12secs to qualify for the semi-final where he ran 7.16 and failed to qualify for the Final.
In the 200m, Luke won his heat in 21.89secs and qualified for the semi-final where he won his race in a time 21.88secs. In the Final, Luke finished third, winning the Bronze medal in a time of 22.01. Speaking to Luke after the races, he likened the whole weekend as an endurance session and part of his preparation for the forthcoming outdoor season.
Karl Billington was entered into the 3000m and was in the final Heat (No. 5) and knew that he had to run sub 8:40min to qualify for the final. Karl took the race on in the second half and came home in 2nd place in a time of 8:37.50min, ensuring his place in the Final.
In the final, Karl went in as 7th fastest runner, but ran well to finish in 5th place in a time of 8:45.72 – the Race being won in 8:40.12 by mature student James Thie!!

It wasn’t the best day at Sunderland weather wise, and we had a number of athletes missing on the day, but that didn’t stop those Harriers who travelled being determined to put everything into their Races. Pride of place goes to the U15 Girls Squad who finished 6th overall out of 23 Teams entered with a 10th position for Liz Greenwood, 11th for Grace Handley; 76th for Deni Impett and 136th for Phoebe Howe.
The U13 Girls also did themselves proud, although one athlete short to make up the Team. Natalya Irvine came home in 74th place out of 264 athletes in the Race; Hannah Cookson in 90th place and Charlotte Taylor 156th. A really brave effort in those conditions.
Other Club members braved the elements and competed. In the U13 Boys, Jack Wilkinson who is showing real improvement of late finished 152nd, but again, in the conditions, that was a creditable run.
In the U17 Men’s Race, Morgan Philips, who has competed consistently well in the local Leagues this year, finished in 181st place.
The Senior Mens Race saw Chris Barnes lead the other Harriers home in 240th place out of a field of 999 finishers. Backing Chris up were John Cookson, and John Orrell.
