European Mountain Running Trial
Jack Hindle had set his sights on this years Trial Race – European Championship Trial (Up & Down) at Whinlatter Forest, Cumbria, Saturday 28 May, in an attempt to win a GB Vest. It didn’t go exactly to plan with Jack telling the Club “International qualification has been one of my main goals this year. Going into the race I felt solid and knew I had got some really good training under my belt. The race set of extremely fast, and split very quickly. I suffered with the early pace but came to, to bring back some quality runners. On the day it just wasn’t to be, but I can’t complain with a top 10 running against the best lads in Britain. It’s made me more motivated to come back stronger next time”

A good day for Bryan Searby at Colne with his second race of the week and a new 10k PB for him when he finished in 58th in 44.16. Not an easy 10k course at all this one and once he gets on a flat one, look for a another big PB. Bryan told the club “My second race of the week. This time I fancied trying the road.Great mid week race.A 2 lap rather hilly route. But my type of course.Felt good on the climbs over taking quite a few.Perfect weather conditions. And pleased I managed to grab a PB 44-16”. Next home in this testing 10k was Lorna Sharp in 144th (57.27) and V50 David Morris (154th) in 62.38).
On the Fells at Fo(e) – May 25th
In his first race of the week, Bryan Searby was out on the Fells telling us that it was “An enjoyable midweek fell race 4.5 miles with two sharp climbs 1000ft ascent. Started in a field and your straight into the first climb. A good race for anybody like myself who are new to fell running. I felt strong after last few weeks off solid hill work, and noticed an improvement on my down hill speed even after pushing hard on the track the night before. Great to see fellow team mates Danny Teare and Ian Clarkson, who both had solid runs. Bryan Searby 43.99 – Danny Teare 46.21- Ian Clarkson 49.27″.
A glorious day greeted the athletes at Hyndburn on Saturday and provided the kind of day that makes Track & Field so enjoyable.
Not a bad day at all for the Harriers youngsters and a host of well earned new personal bests as well as some first timers at competition and others trying events for the first time. Alex Bernstein (U15) had a really good day with two wins in the Hammer (35.93m) and in the Discus with a new PB by nearly 4 metres of 32.08m. Connor Davison (U20) and throwing with the Senior weight set a new PB in the Shot Putt (5th) with 8.68m, a new PB in the Discus (5th) with 25.33, and 29.69m in the Javelin (5th). Wayne McIntosh who has joined Blackburn for T & F to have a go at the Throws marked his first competition since his school days with a throw of 6.20m in the Shot Putt and 19.13m in the Javelin. U17 Jacob Roberts continued his very good form with another win in the Hammer and a consistent throw of 64.80m. It was a case of 3, 2 ,1 for U17 Anthony Kent continuing with his fine form this season placing 3rd in the Shot Putt (11.17m), 2nd in the Hammer (36.77m) and 1st in the Discus (35.17m). New competitor U13 Connor Wilcock took on the Shot Putt (10th) with 4.46m and the Javelin 11th with 14.57m. Kyle Taylor-Pomfret (U13) had a great day winning the Discus with a new PB of 14.22m, came 4th in the Javelin with 21.54m and was just outside his PB by a second in the 1500m (6th) in a time of 5.20.70. Couldn’t keep the Rory Teare out of the frame with Rory coming 7th in the Javelin (19.37m), setting a new PB in the High Jump of 1.35m and taking on the 200m for the first time ever (4th) in 31.30.
Leon Thomas (U15) had a great race in the U15 800m coming home 3rd in 2.20.50 and a new PB by four seconds and then just missed out on a second PB of the day in the Long Jump finishing 11th with 3.99m, just 10cms short of his best. In the same 800m race, U15 Jamie Teare showed what good form he is in this year with a new PB of 2.25.20 (5th) knocking a second and half off his previous best and then went on to set his second new PB of the day in the High Jump placing 3rd with 1.50m.
Brothers George Whittaker and Ben Whittaker were giving it everything on the day with U13 George setting a new PB in the 100m (4th) 14.80, placing 10th in the Long Jump with 3.83m and 8th in the Javelin (19.36m). U15 Ben also had a pretty good day with 5th in the 100m (13.20), 5th again in the 200m (27.10) and cleared 1.40m in the High Jump. A second set of brothers Ethan Joyce (U15) and Joseph Joyce are two new young members who are getting stuck into their athletics and with smiles on their faces too. Ethan ran the 400m for the first time ever and came 2nd in 64.10 which was a great start for him whilst Joseph came 2nd in his 800m, his first time at this distance, in a good time of 2.37.50.
Among the Seniors out on the day we saw V50 Tony Balko running the 100m in an impressive 14.20, a week after he ran 30.55 in the 200m at Wakefield in the Northern League. Pretty good running for an athlete who cannot remember the last time he raced those distances!! Returning to his more traditional events, Tony threw 30.79m in the Hammer to place 2nd. Tim Raynes had a go at the 800m for the first ever time running an impressive 2.04.30 (6th) while Rachel Jones who wanted to get under 5 minutes for the 1500m, duly obliged, winning in a time of 4.58.00 with Hayley Candler placing 2nd in the Senior Women’s 100m in 14.30 – and John Ilunga – 2nd in the High Jump clearing 1.60m.
Charlotte Williams (U15) carried on her very fine season of remaining unbeaten in the Hammer winning all of her six events to-date, including the Lancashire Championships. At Hyndburn she threw 51.67m and remains top of the National Rankings.
Good performance from U15 Liberty Thompson too on the day running just outside her 200m PB when she ran 31.70 (4th) and then nailed it in the 800m, winning the race impressively and knocking three seconds off her time to set a new PB of 2.37.10.
Brother Dexta Thompson ran his first track race for Blackburn Harriers today at Trafford and won the 600m in a new PB time of 1.48 and took home a Gold Medal for his efforts.
Eloise Littlefair is getting back to her best after a series of injuries over a long time. A new PB in the Shot saw Ellie finish 2nd with a throw of 11.24m. The she won the Discus with a throw of 27.37m, just cms off her PB and then finished off with 2nd in the Javelin with 28.49m to round off an impressive day for her.
U15 Abigail Brown was also among the Throws in this her first season and only her third competition ever. In the Discus she threw 13.94m (7th) and in the Javelin 13.56m (15th). U13 Myah Booth set off with a bang coming 3rd in the 100m with a new PB of 14.40 and all first three girls being credited with the same time. She then moved onto Long Jump and was one centimetre off a new PB with a jump of 3.80m (10th). Her next event was the Shot Putt where set her second new PB of the day placing 2nd with 8.83m.
Charlotte Corrigan (U13) ran the 200m setting a big new PB coming home 3rd in 30.60 which was well over three seconds faster than her previous best. U13 Emma Love was competing at only her second ever League competition and did really well setting a new PB in the Long Jump of 3.94m and 5th out of a competition featuring 25 Long Jumpers. Another U13 Nicky Saunders was competing at only her second ever competition and she placed 5th in the High Jump with 1.10m and 8th out of 21 Shot Putters with 5.61m in an event that she hasn’t competed in previously. Danielle Probert is another new competitor in the U13’s who competed in the Shot Putt (20th) throwing 4.02m and just missed a PB in the Javelin throwing 13.13m (10th).
Alison Leonard is really putting her season together at the moment, racing three times in the last eleven days which kicked off at Trafford (17th May) with a 2.02.25 in a mixed 800m race. She followed that up (FBK Games Hengelo – 22nd May) with smashing her 1500m best time by four seconds to set a new PB of 4.09.59 and then on May 28th (IFAM Outdoor Belgium) won her 800m Race with a time of 2.00.71, just a ‘midges” from breaking through the 2.00minute barrier.
Understandably happy with her form Alison commented “I ran 2:00:71 tonight in Belgium, got to get another and then that’s still only one barrier cleared, trials is going to be manic, but great to get that mark down”.
