Round 2 of this years YDL (Upper Age Group) took place in great sunshine over the Bank Holiday weekend at Wavertree and it proved that in the Premier League you have to have your full Team out if you are going to be competitive. With absences due to Exams, injuries and holidays, the Team was always going to struggle, but the commitment of those athletes available on the day was exemplary. Some of the athletes were competing for the first time at this level or were in their first season or were competing as bottom of age and for the athletes to set eighteen new personal bests on the day was a credit to them all. Credit also to the Team Managers – Wendy Hitchon and John Cookson who had the ‘enviable’ role of juggling the team.
In the Sprints U20 John Ilunga set a new 100m PB with 12.87 (4th) and knocked nearly two seconds off his 200m outdoor best time to set a new PB of 26.40, adding a 3rd place 1.55m clearance in the High Jump and setting a third new PB of the day in the Long Jump of 4.79m (4th). Samuel Kearns in his first ever competition for the Club ran 13.15 as an U17 in the U20 ‘B’ Race. Samuel then went on to set a big new PB in the Javelin with a 2nd placed throw of 39.43m to herald a really good start for him in League competition. Cameron Massey and new member and first time competitor – Luke Kenyon ran the U17 100m with times of 12.52 for Cameron in the ‘A’ and 12.76 for Luke in the ‘B’. Luke went on to place 2nd in the High Jump (1.50m) and 3rd in the Long Jump with 5.04m all of which marked a very good start to his Harriers career.
Morgan Angland set a new PB of 13.03 in the U20 Women’s 100m and then having got to grips with going up in distance, set another new PB in the 100m Hurdles to take 2nd place in a time of 15.4 and going on to set a seasons best of 4.64m in the Long Jump (4th). Chloe Bleeks and Teigan Fawcett were the ‘A’ and ‘B’ runners in the U17 Women’s 100m which saw Chloe finish 6th in 13.76 and Teigan who has never run a track race before also placing 6th in 14.86 and in the process, showing great commitment to the Team. The two of them doubled up in the 200m with Chloe finishing 5th in 28.56 and Teigan 5th in 31.04. Chloe also set a new PB in the Triple Jump when she cleared 9.20m (5th) adding nearly half a metre to her previous best mark. Teigan also set a seasons best in the Javelin with a 4th placed 23.30m. Javelin thrower – U17 Sam Pearson-Moore, who had only ever once run a track race took on the ‘B’ U20 200m and ran 28.05 saying that he would ‘never do that again’.
U17 Nicholas Massey can hardly go to a fixture without setting a new PB and he was on the mark again in the 200m with a time of 25.03 (5th) and then made it a double new PB winning the 100m Hurdles in 14.4 before clearing 1.50m in the High Jump (4th). Cameron Massey took 2nd place in the ‘B’ 100m Hurdles in 16.98 and that after hitting virtually every hurdle! He went on to place 3rd in the Discus with 24.94m and 6th in the 100m with 12.52.
In only his second competition for the Club – Tom Doherty set a new PB in the ‘B’ 200m of 25.40m and set another new PB when he won the Triple Jump with a leap of 12.51m, making it a triple set of new PB’s on the day when he cleared 5.21m in the Long Jump (4th). Yet another new PB for Olivia Wilson in the U20 400m (5th) in 65.65 and a second new PB in the ‘B’ 800m by nearly two seconds in 3rd place (2.35.69). Phoebe Howe set a seasons best in the ‘A’ 800m with 2.51.56 (5th) then took 3rd spot in the 400m Hurdles (82.5) and added a 2nd place in the Hammer to help the team get points. Katie Buckingham who throws everything into her efforts for the Club ran 68.59 in the ‘B’ 400m (4th), came 3rd in the 1500m in 5.23.49, 2nd in the 1500m Steeplechase with 5.59.37 and 5th in the Discus with a throw of 12.82m.
U17 Natalya Irvine ran 2.42.36 in the ‘A’ 800m, 5.17.53 in the 1500m and threw 7.84m in the Shot. If anything typifies the team spirit on the day, it was the run of Maddie Elliott in the 3000m. Having been advised prior to the race that she had done enough and to give it a miss, the next thing we know, she was in the race, finishing 3rd in a new PB time of 10.38.35 and this after she had run a new PB in the ‘B’ 80m Hurdles (3rd) in 14.50 and placed 2nd in the 300m Hurdles (50.01), an event that she had never done before! Esme Pearse set a seasons best in the ‘A’ 80m Hurdles (4th) in 14.81 and was just outside her PB in the High Jump finishing 4th with a clearance of 1.45m. Sister Polly Pearse won the U20 100m Hurdles with a seasons best of 16.7 and added valuable points with 3rd in the High Jump (1.50m), 5th in the Triple Jump with 9.46m and 2nd in the Javelin with a seasons best of 25.84m.
U20 Connor Davison in his second competition of the weekend threw 9.17m in the Shot Putt (6kg) and 27.69 in the Discus (5th) and then added a new PB by over 2 metres with 32.50m in the Javelin placing 4th.
