Gold and Bronze Medals & Championship Record at the Northern U15 / U17 T & F Championships for the Harriers
Four Blackburn Harriers athletes went up to the Northern Championships at Middlesborough at the weekend and came back with two Gold and two Bronze Medals along with a Northern Championships Record which was a great performance by them all.

Second in the National Rankings Charlotte Williams got the day off to a great start winning the U15 Girls Hammer with a throw of 55.82m which was a new Championship Record. This was Charlotte’s 14th Hammer competition of the year in which she has won 13 and was 2nd in the English Schools, gaining a Silver Medal adding to her wins in the Lancashire Schools and Lancashire County Championships. It has been a very impressive season for her and she spoke to the Club after becoming Northern Champion saying “Today was one of our last championship competitions, I am quite proud of what I got which in the end was 8cm off my personal best what I got last week. I have one more championship competition yet so the next two weeks is going to be lots of work and we will see what happens then”.
Jacob Roberts has had twenty Hammer competitions so far this season winning seventeen of them and placing second in the other three. Over the season he has won the Lancashire Schools and Lancashire County Championships, came 2nd in English Schools, has now won the Northerns and stands 2nd in the National Rankings. Jacob reflected on the Championships saying “I went to Middlesbrough this weekend for the Northern Counties Championships . We had 3 Hammer throwers competing, me, Charlotte and Alex . Good competition with both days being sunny. I became Northern Counties Champion for U17 for 2016. Looking forward now to Bedford National Comp in two weeks. Well done to all athletes from Blackburn Harriers”.
Emily Warren had a pretty good Championships winning a Bronze Medal in the U15 Girls 75m Hurdles. In her Heat, Emily came 2nd in a time of 12.12 and improved her time to 12.02 in the Final to finish in Bronze Medal position. Afterwards, Emily told the Club that she was “Really happy to get in the final and in the top three, I feel like I’m slowly making improvements but I’m just happy to be injury free and improving every time”.
Alex Bernstein Starting the season with a PB of 28.36m, Alex has really progressed and now has a PB of 42.69m which is a massive improvement. He is having a very good first season as bottom of age U15. So far he has competed 15 times with the 4kg Hammer winning ten of them, with three second places, one third spot and 11th in the English Schools Final. Included were good performances winning Silver Medals at Lancashire Schools and Lancashire County Championships.
Sophie Hitchon today – at the 2016 Rio Olympics – went into the final throw of the competition needing to throw a personal best to get into the medals. Showing absolute focus and a steel like determination, Sophie smashed her own British National Record, posting a new personal best of 74.54m in a career defining moment.
What she achieved in the Olympic arena is what she deserved for all of the hard work, determination, sweat, tears, highs and lows over the last 8 years. She is an inspiration to everyone in the Blackburn Harriers and to all young athletes everywhere.
Sophie joins Samantha Murray as the second Blackburn Harrier to have won an Olympic Medal.
She is living proof that there are no limits.
