Great start for the Harriers in YDL – Astley Park Race Series – PB for Victoria in Kendal 10k

UKYDL at Bury – Saturday April 22nd

Great morning with plenty of warm weather and sunshine as we set off from Witton Park with a Coach full of young athletes to the first fixture of the season in this years UKYDL Lower Age Group for U13 and U15 athletes. Some of the athletes were in their first season of League competition, some in their second and some in their first ever competition; And what a performance they pulled out on the day. Unfortunately there was an issue with the Results programme which meant that the final outcome was delayed for nearly two weeks. However in the end the Club put in a very good performance to finish in 2nd place on the day just 36 points behind the winners Bury. In 3rd place came Bolton; 4th was Team North Cumbria; 5th Menai T &F; 6th Macclesfield; 7th East Cheshire.

PROVISIONAL RESULTS

The day saw the Team produce 23 new personal bests, 24 event wins, twelve 2nd places and eight 3rd places which is not a bad way to start the season. Team Managers Mick Angland for the Girls and Danny Teare for the Boys were very pleased with all of the athletes and how they performed on the day. Great effort and Team spirit.

U15 Leon Thomas set three new PB’s on the day winning the ‘A’ 800m in 2.13.4 which was a massive six seconds faster and then knocked off two seconds to set a new 300m PB time of 46.7 (6th) in the ‘A’ with Ethan Barbarewicz running 49.1 (7th) in the ‘B’ which was his first time over the distance.. Harvey Ashworth won the ‘B’ U15 800m in 2.22.3 reducing his previous best by six seconds for a new PB too. More new PB’s were set and the latest in the day came from the ever improving Leah Hoole in the U13  ‘A’ 800m when she chopped nearly seven seconds off her previous best to set a new PB of 2.34.4 proving once again the benefit of a good cross country season in the winter for middle distance athletes which helps to set young athletes up for the Track season. The same can be said for Kate Cookson who made her debut in the ‘B’ 800m coming home in 2nd place with a time of 2.43.4. Really good runs from the U13 Girls in the 1200m earned the Team more valuable points with Hollie Cubbon taking 2nd spot in the ‘A’ (4.21.0) and Eleanor Allsop winning the ‘B’ in a time of 4.45.8 and yet another young athlete making her debut over this new distance. Kendal 10k – May 3rd

One hundred runners set off in this hilly 10k Race won eventually by Quentin Gratrix in a time of 35.27. Among them was Blackburn Harrier Victoria Mousley who has only just run a PB in the 10k and broken 40 minutes for the second time.

Race Results

Victoria had a great run finishing in 17th place overall, 1st Female Vet and in a massive new PB time of 38.55. Delighted as you can imagine, Victoria Mousley told the club after the Race“My friend jo suggested the race as a nice undulating course….the marshal at the start laughed when I said “It’s undulating isn’t it?” “Very hilly” she replied. Any ideas of sub 40 vanished into the sky. I saw lizzie Adams and Heidi Dent at the start so knew that they would be very fast. My plan was to try and keep Heidi in my sights. The race started very suddenly. A fast pace from the off, then climbing started up the road to Sedgwick. I felt good for 2 k then it started to hurt. I dug in, gritted my teeth on the ups and swore when I turned the corner and saw one of the hills we had to run up. However two miles up means two miles down and I tried to run as hard as I could back to Kendal. I didn’t look at my watch just kept plodding on. I was delighted to finish in 38.55. A huge pb of 49 seconds”
