Fifteen athletes contested the Final on Friday evening – July 12th – which included the athlete with the fastest personal best of 15.26.76 – Tomomi Takamatsu – making her the favourite on paper. However, when it came to it, Jess ran a perfect race, never being out of contention and over the last couple of laps, started to wind it up, finishing with a devestating break on the final lap which took her 30 metres clear going down the back straight. It was a fabulous run on a great night for an athlete who never gives any quarter and one which, as she was giving it everything round the last bend, made your heart beat quicken, more than a touch, as she powered to the Gold Medal.
Afterwards, a very happy Jess spoke to the Harriers about her race saying “It was such a great race, probably the most physical I’ve been in. There was a lot of pushing and shoving and surging and I just wanted to stick to the plan to kick with 400m to go and it went perfectly. It meant so much to win and I’m over the moon!”
