A gloriously warm day greeted the athletes as they lined up for the final fixture in this years Northern League Division One at Witton Park. Congratulations to Wakefield on winning the League this year and you could see how much it meant to the athletes as they lined up for their victory photo on the home straight. The Harriers finished 5th on the day just six points shy of 4th place and thirty points off 3rd.

Dominic Bretherton and Brandon Zinyemba took on the sprints with Brandon taking 3rd in the ‘A’ 100m (11.3) for 3rd place and equaling his PB whilst Dominic came 2nd with 11.4 in the ‘B’. Roles reversed in the 200m with Dominic in the ‘A’ – 6th in 23.3 which was a new PB and Brandon in the ‘B’ – 2nd in 23.4. It was a tough job for Chloe Bleeks and Polly Pearse in the Women’s Sprints – Chloe placing 6th in the ‘A’ 100m (13.7) and 6th in the ‘A’ 200m (28.5) whilst Polly came home in 6th (28.7) in the ‘B’ 200m.
A big treat for the spectators came in the Women’s 400m ‘A’ which saw International Alison Leonard competing for the Club, winning the ‘A’ 400m in a time of 55.2, a distance she hasn’t raced for over a year. Connor Makin is showing the benefit of injury free training at the moment and took 4th place in the Men’s ‘A’ 400m with 54.4 whilst Tim Raynes took on the ‘B’ Race placing 4th in 57.5 over a distance he has never competed at. Connor then took 2nd spot in the 400m Hurdles in 58.6 with Paul Coffey jumping in to help the Club earn some points by tackling the ‘B’ Race where he came 4th in 80.1; And in the Women’s 400m Hurdles, Esme Pearse stepped in to help out with our leading hurdlers not available and came 6th in 86.8.
In the 800m Tim Raynes who had taken on the 400m for the first time ever then took on the ‘A’ 800m for only the second time in his life finishing 5th in 2.05.0 with Karl Billington coming home in 4th in the ‘B’ in a time of 2.13.9. There was a great performance from V45 Rachel Jones in the ‘A’ 800m running the distance for the second time ever since 2004, placing 5th in 2.29.9 and a new PB by 8 seconds. Olivia Wilson who was carrying a niggling injury turned out for the Club to do the ‘B’ 800m coming in 4th (2.39.5). There was another comfortable win in the 1500m for Alison Leonard in a time of 4.36.8 and she was backed up by V45 Joanne Nelson who took 2nd in the ‘B’ with a time of 5.12.7. In the Men’s 1500m Rob Warner came 2nd in the ‘A’ with 4.01.1 whilst Chris Matthews won the ‘B’ Race in a time of 4.06.1.
Six wins out of six races followed in the 3000m Steeplechase, 3000m and 5000m. In the Chase, Joe Monk having his first ever effort at the event won the ‘A’ in a time of 10.17.7 whilst Chris Davies won the ‘B’ Race in a new PB time by eight seconds of 10.36.6. In the 5000m it was a win for Gary Priestley in the ‘A’ with 15.26.08 and another win for Ben Fish in the ‘B’ (15.38.5). Great performances in the Women’s 3000m with Rachel Jones winning the ‘A’ (10.32.6) in a seasons best and Joanne Nelson winning the ‘B’ in 11.05.3.
Oliver Aspden set a seasons best taking 2nd spot in the ‘A’ 110m Hurdles of 16.4 and then made it a double win with a clearance of 1.70m in the High Jump. Caleb Lee, competing for the first time this season, came 2nd in the ‘B’ High Jump (1.50m), 5th in the Long Jump (4.83m) and 6th in the ‘A’ Triple Jump with 10.00m. Ben Aspinall jumped well in the ‘A’ Long Jump clearing 6.15m for 3rd place. Sisters Polly Pearse and Esme Pearse doubled up in the High Jump with Polly taking 3rd in the ‘A’ (1.55m) and Esme winning the ‘B’ with a clearance of 1.45m. In the Triple Jump Polly set a new PB by nearly half a metre when she cleared 10.35m for 4th spot whilst Chloe Bleeks also set a new PB in the ‘B’ by 15cms clearing 9.35m in 4th place.
In the Men’s Throws Tony Balko came 4th in the ‘A’ Hammer (31.79m), 5th in the ‘B’ Discus with 28.08m and 5th in the ‘B’ Shot Putt (9.28m) whilst Simon Brown took 4th in the ‘B’ Hammer (18.70m), 3rd in the ‘A’ Discus (34.46m) and 2nd in the ‘A’ Shot with a throw of 11.49m. U17 Sam Pearson-Moore threw a new PB by some two metres for 4th in the Javelin with 40.77m with Connor Davison finishing a good 3rd in the ‘B’ with a throw of 30.78m. An excellent Hammer competition saw Rebecca Orrell take 3rd place with a throw of 44.41m with Christina Carr helping out in the ‘B’ taking 6th (17.23m). Rebecca went on to Shot (6th) with 7.92m and Discus (5th) with a throw of 25.48m. Polly Pearse wasn’t far off her personal best in the ‘A’ Javelin (5th) with 25.21m with Rebecca placing 5th in the ‘B’ (16.11m) for her fourth Throws event of the day.
