New PB’s for Jacob & Joe at Trafford – Top 5 for John at Pilgrims Cross – Annabel Wins Astley Park Trail Series + Vet and Junior Titles
It was a good night for Jacob Watson at Trafford on Tuesday night in the 3000m. This was his third race at Trafford this year and also his first year racing on the track. Kicking off with 9.19.95 in April he ran another 9.19. 07 in May and last night smashed that time to set a new PB of 9.03.64 and this after clocking 15.48.3 in just his third race over 5000m at the Northern League Division 1 Match at Ellesmere Port recently.
Similarly a good outing for U20 Joe Gebbie too as he took on the 1500m. Joe’s personal best of 4.11.80 was set in June just after he broke through the two minute barrier for 800m (1.59.0). Joe was one of seven athletes who all posted new personal bests on the night and his 4.11.37 clocking represented a new PB by nearly half a second. Nick Smith went into race 5 of the 800m’s with a previous best fo 2.06.96 and looking to improve on that. In the event, Nick ran 2.09.86. In the Throws there was a win for Tony Balko as he threw 35.71m in winning the Discus (1.5kg) and then finished just outside his seasons best in the Shot Putt (6kg) with 11.21m in 3rd place.

Pilgrim’s Cross Fell Race – Wednesday August 7th
John Horrocks is adding more top 5 and top 10 finishes to his record on the Fells, the latest being at Pilgrim’s Cross on Wedsneday night. A field of 151 runners contested the race won by Bury’s Ben Coop in 47.39. John had another fine run as he crossed the finishing line in 5th spot clocking 51.38. Reflecting on the race afterwards, John commented “New route tonight for pilgrims cross, Bit longer and more climbing. Better weather this week after last weeks bog swimming for the second race in the Rossendale series. Had a good first climb out but after that struggled a bit so had to really work hard to keep a decent position and finish 5th. Well done to all who ran!”

Astley Park Trail Series – Wedsneday August 7th
It was the final race of this year’s Series attracting 134 runners and headed by three Trafford athletes in first, second and third places – Danny Lawton taking the win in a rapid 19.18 with 2nd and 3rd places clocking equally rapid times of 20.08 and 20.17.
Three Blackburn Harriers ran with John Cookson being the first across the line in 43rd place overall with a time of 25.58, followed by Lindsay Davies in 61st running 27/08 and Hannah Cookson clocking 28.59 in 79th position. In the overall Series results, Annabel Ralph took the Women’s title with Lindsay Davies taking the Women’s V40 series title.

The final race in the Juniors Series had 79 youngsters contesting which saw Isaac Battye win on the night in a time of 4.46 some six seconds in front of 2nd placed Jack Lamb. Sam Aspey was the first Blackburn Harrier home in 5th place and 1st M10 clocking a time of 5.11 with Oliver Gill in 8th (5.19).

They were followed by a trio of Harriers with just three seconds separating them – Kate Cookson (17th) with a time of 5.45, Matthew Smith ((18th) in 5.47, and Hannah Davies (19th) running 5.48. Evan Potter came home in 34th place running a time of 6.19 with 8yr old Charlotte Smith two seconds behind in 35th clocking 6.21.

In the Junior Series overall – Sam Aspey won the M11 Boys title, Hannah Davies was F11 equal 2nd and in the open male series the Harriers had three in the top ten – Sam Aspey (5th) with Oliver Gill and Matthew Smith in joint 7th.
