Lancashire County Championships May 24/25th 2013 – (or another windy day at Blackpool!)
Thirty four Blackburn Harriers defied the wind on Saturday and early Sunday and basked in the sunshine on Sunday afternoon; And there were some very good performances.
14 Harriers won Gold Medals, 11won Silver and 13 won Bronze medals. Added to that was a Team Medal for the Senior Men’s 5000m with Andy Buttery (16:34.4), Chris Barnes (16:45.4), Shaun Livesey (16:46.90), ‘Youngster’ Tom Blaney (17:12.60) and Gary Pearse (18:29.30) making up the winning team.
And with Woman’s 5000m winner – Helen Leigh (19.07.50) – a Blackburn Harrier who will just not be beaten:
Just as important in the two day competition were the individual performances. In total athletes achieved 32 PB’s and 7 SB’s. In addition, Liz Greenwood recorded a Championship Best Performance in the 3000m winning in 10:15.00 and Rebecca Orrell in the Hammer recorded a throw of 37.82 in winning the U17 Women’s Hammer and breaking the Club Record in the process.
In the Sprints there were PB’s for U17 Jake Almond in the 100m 11.7 (3rd in the Final) and 23.70 in the 200m (3rd in the Final); U17 Gareth Johnson 12.00 in the 100m (Heat) – U20 Paul Coffey also had a double PB with 11.8 in the 100m and 24.00 in the 200m.
Further PB’s were achieved by U17 Ben Aspinall in the 100m Hurdles in 15.8 (3rd in the Final); Katie Buckingham 300m Hurdles 48.3 (3rd in the Final); Polly Pearse 13.2 in the 80m Hurdles (1st in the Final); a SB’s for Rachel Leech in the 400m (60.9) and staying on the Track, Grace Handley ran two PB’s, the first one in the 1500 (4:57.3) and then in the 3000m (10:32.0), winning Silver Medals in both.
Jack Hindle recorded a huge PB in the 3000m knocking 42 seconds of his PB with a 9:39.3 clocking. Joseph Howe, making his debut in the Steeple Chase, ran solo in a time of 5:08.3, took a Gold Medal and moved immediately to 32nd in the National Rankings. Connor Makin added to his growing reputation as a 400m and 400m Hurdle runner with a PB over the flat 400 in 53.3secs.
Some cracking performances in the Field too. Sarah Henton threw a SB to win the Senior Women’s Discus Final with a fine Throw of 49:34. In the Hammer, U17 Rebecca Orrell in addition to winning the event and breaking the Club Record came 3rd in the Shot Putt Final with 8.10m and 2nd in the Discus Final (28.47m; Nathan Billington threw two PB’s and won two Silver medals in the Hammer U17 Men’s Final (2nd 36.53m) and Discus Final with 25.31m – In the U15 Boys Connor Davison won Silver in the Hammer (25.08m).
In other Field Events, there were PB’s for Ben Aspinall in the Long Jump (5.65m & Bronze Medal) and in the Javelin (23.63m). Esme Pearse also had a double PB with 1.35m in the High Jump and 1.90m in the Pole Vault (Gold Medal). Olivia Brooks was another with a double PB 1.45m (Bronze Medal) in the High Jump and 4.54m in the Long Jump Final. Natalya Irvine shone in the U13 Girls Shot Putt winning the Gold Medal with a Throw of 7.92m. There were PB’s for Morgan Angland in the 75m Hurdles (12.00) and Silver Medal and Elizabeth Ashcroft in the same Race with 13.30sec – Elizabeth went on to record another PB in the U15 Girls Long Jump Final with 4.01m.
Joe Pearse had two SB’s winning the High Jump Gold Medal (1.85m) and gaining Silver in the Discus (29.59m).
