A very windy, cold but bright day greeted the athletes at the first Mid Lancs League fixture of the year at Blackpool.

The big talking point of the day for the Harriers was around the question – who would win the unofficial 100m sprint championship from these boys?
The pre-Race favourite Jamie ‘Blue Boy’ Vickery took the bragging rights when finishing 2nd in a PB time of 11.00sec, followed by Oliver Aspden in 3rd equalling his PB of 11.20, Archie Braysford – a tenth outside his PB in 4th with 11.30, Dominic Bretherton in 5th with setting a new PB of 11.30 and Paul Coffey in 6th (11.40). Jamie went onto win the 200m in 23.10 with Paul in 3rd place (23.90).
Tony Balko had an early outing in the Throws following some really hard gym sessions including one the night before. In the Shot Tony took 5th spot with 9.41m, 2nd in the Discus with 27.41m and 6th in the Hammer with a throw of 29.07m. New member Simon Brown, in his first outing for the Club won the Mens Senior Discus with 40.47m which is an excellent start to the season following a long period of injury and no competition.
In the U17 Mens Throws Connor Davison had a really good day winning the Shot Putt with 10.84m, taking 3rd in the Discus with 26.37m and 6th in the Javelin (28.14m).
Jacob Roberts was again in good form winning the U17 Mens Hammer with a Throw of 48.03m. All the Throwers had pretty bad conditions to deal with in terms of the swirling wind.
U15 Boy Anthony Kent had a good day with a 3rd place in the Shot Putt (8.77m) and winning the Javelin with 27.07m. He had three foul throws in the Javelin but that is a learning experience for him. New member Lucas Davies also had a good introduction into competition along with Anthony finishing 5th in the Discus with 15.35m, 11th in the Javelin (15.60m) and 9th in the Shot Putt (5.75m).
U15 Eloise Littlefair competed in the Throws where she took 2nd in the Shot Putt with a throw of 9.05m and a new PB – 2nd in the Discus with 19.54m and 6th in the Javelin with 21.94m. This was a good performance after an extended period of being unable to train because of injuries.
Another U13 having a good day was Olivia Blow who finished 2nd in the 100m in 15.10 knocking four tenths off her best time to set a new PB of 15.10sec and then competed in a monster field of 32 Long Jumpers where she finished 18th with 2.98m.
In the U15 Girls 1500m, there was a good race which featured Amy Davies and Kirsty Hamilton who ran neck and neck throughout the last two laps with Kirsty having the edge down the home straight. Amy finished 2nd in 5.42.10 and given the wind that represented a solid race for her.
Joe Pearse who has recently cleared 2.04m in the High Jump duly won the Senior Men’s HJ with a leap of 1.95m and pleasing to see him jump without a knee support which throughout his 2014 season was part of the his sports bag.
Huzaifa Hanif ran his best 800m Race to-date taking 9 seconds of his previous best to set a new PB of 2.05.50 in the U17 event. With splits of 63 and 62 he was a whisker of catching the winner right on the line. He then went and ran the 100m – against advice – finishing 6th in 12.30sec which knocked four tenths of a second of his old time to set a new PB.
U13 Boy Sam Farnworth had an excellent day when he grabbed himself a new PB in the 100m with a 2nd placed 13.90sec and then went on to win the 200m in a time of 30.90sec which was his first ever attempt at the distance.
New member Leon Thomas was itching to compete for the first time taking on the 200m and finishing 5th with 32.10 and that after he had earlier run the 800m taking 6th place in a good time of 2.43.70. Another new member – Luke Ingleson – was equally eager to compete for the first time and ran the 800min in 9th place (2.55.10) as well as the 200m where he finished 3rd with 33.70sec just behind Jamie Teare who took 2nd place in 32.50sec in his first ever attempt at the distance. Jamie went on to set a new PB in the U13’s 1500m knocking three seconds off to set a new PB of 5.16.40 and 2nd in the Race. Jamie kept up with setting new PB’s to take another one in the Shot putt – 5th with 5.78m – over a metre better than his previous best.
U15 Hannah Cookson took on the 300m and 200m Races finishing 4th in the 200m with 29.20m and then won the 300m, equalling her PB of 46.1sec but in that wind was definitely PB form. She also competed in the Long Jump placing 9th in the 20 strong field with 4.07m. Another new member Chloe Bleeks also took on the 300m and 200m double in her first ever competition. In the 300m she ran really well to finish 4th with 49.20sec and took a really good 3rd place in the 200m with 31.00sec.

Rebecca Orrell travelled to Wigan and Liver pool at the weekend. First fixture up on Saturday was the Liverpool Harriers Throws & Jumps Meeting followed by the Wigan Spring Open meeting on Sunday.

Rebecca took 3rd place in the Shot Putt with 8.21m – her PB is 8.51m and then took another 3rd place in a very good quality competition throwing a new PB of 41.52m and she was very pleased with her weekend’s efforts telling us that “Liverpool Jumps and Throws was a great competition of the elite athletes. So I was very pleased with a PB and a bronze medal. Wigan open meeting wasn’t the best of weathers but with two gold medals and distances not far off my PB im very pleased”.

Hollie Cubbon competed at the British Schools Biathlon Championships in London on March 28th and had a good competition.
Mum Suzanne said after watching her compete that she “did really well at the National schools Biathlon 2015 this weekend coming 16th out of 109 finalists and having to compete a year up as an 11 year old.
She did a 2.53 min 800m run and a 35 second 50 metre swim The event took place in the Queen Elizabeth Park, London and swimming in the 50m Olympic pool was an amazing experience.
The run was hard in windy conditions and on a course that had a few sharp turns but a great event”.
