After a great start to the season winning the first Match, the Club was looking forward to consolidate its position after Match 2. However, missing a number of athletes through exams meant that the number of athletes available to the Club were reduced. Although Trafford came out the very clear winners on the day, only forty three points separated clubs in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th position, which gives an indication of how close the fixture actually was.

As usual, the squad delivered some really good performances which included six PB’s; thirteen SB’s and an English Schools qualifying Standard; ten event wins; eleven 2nd places and nineteen 3rd places.

U20 Connor Makin had a great day of competition in winning the 400mH (56.3) a full two tenths inside the ES qualifying standard time of 55.5 which was a great run and new PB, and set the tone for the squad. He added another PB over the 400m to finish 2nd (51.6sec) and also won the 110mH ‘A’ Race in 17.3sec. Joe Pearse responded in fine style by winning the 110mH (18.2sec); ‘A’ High Jump (1.90m) and ‘A’ Javelin (38.14m); There were wins for Jacinta Davison in the ‘B’ 1500m (5.43.7); Liz Greenwood in the 300m ‘A’ (10.56.4); Liz again in the 1500m S/C (5.44.1); Grace Handley in the ‘B’ 3000m (11.31.3); Connor Makin in the ‘B’ High Jump and a season’s best of (1.65m); U17 Olivia Brooks ‘A’ Long Jump with a season’s best of (4.75m); Ben Aspinall broke through the 13m barrier for the first time in the ‘A’ Triple Jump (13.07m) setting a new PB and Sophie Taylor won the U20 ‘B’ 400mH (77.1sec). Rebecca Orrell won the U17 ‘A’ Hammer with a throw of 46.31m to continue her impressive run of form.

There were season’s best performances for U20 Phoebe Howe in the 200m (29.2sec) and 300m (45.9sec) – U20 Joe Pearse in the 400m (53.7sec) – Grace Handley 800m (2.26.8sec) – U17 Chris Dulling in only his second ever 1500m just a second outside his season’s best in the ‘A’ 1500m (4.58.8.sec) – Joe Monk in the ‘B’ 1500m (4.33.9sec) – U20 Katie Buckingham in the Discus (3rd) with 12.94m and 28.1sec for another 3rd in the ‘A’ 200m. Katie then went on to PB in her 1500m by eight seconds to finish 2nd in 5.18.6sec.

Amongst the sprinters U20 Paul Coffey placed 3rd in both the ‘A’ 100m (11.4sec) and in the ‘A’ 200m (23.00sec). U17 Jake Almond won good points with two 2nd place finishes in the the ‘A’ 200m equaling his PB of 23.2secs, 11.7secs in the ‘B’ 100m and added a season’s best in the Long Jump (4.72m). U20 Gareth Johnson ran a season’s best 26.4sec in the ‘B’ 200m. U20 Sophie Taylor ran a season’s best 14.4 sec ‘A’ (100m) and set a new PB of 9.54m in the Triple Jump. Morgan Angland ran 13.4sec for 4th place in the in the U17 ‘A’ 100m and finished 2nd in the ‘A’ 80m Hurdles (12.6sec). U17 Polly Pearse cleared 1.50m (3rd) in the High Jump and added a two more 2nd places in the 80mH (13.5sec) and Triple Jump (8.71m).

U17 Ross Liddle has just come into the Team this year and has made an impressive start taking 4th place in the ‘B’ 200m (25.3sec) and in his first ever attempt at the Triple Jump landed 10.28m for a 3rd place finish as well as taking 2nd place in the 400mH (65.6sec). U20’s Joseph Howe and Rob Savage took on the 800m with Joseph in 3rd place in the ‘A’ Race with 2.06.0 and Rob a season’s best of 2.17.1 in the ‘B’ Race. Both then contested the 2000m S/C and were unfortunately the only two entrants in the Race and Rob had to pull out after clipping the water jump.

In the Throws U17 Connor Davison finished 3rd in the Hammer (25.30m); 4th in the Discus with 23.70m and 5th in the Shot Putt (9.35m). U17 Rebecca Orrell finished 3rd in the Discus (21.42m) and 3rd in the Shot Putt with 8.36m. With back up in the Throws events from athletes Gareth Johnson, Paul Coffey, Jacinta Davison, Jabe Saothong, Grace Handley and Joseph Howe who wouldn’t normally do these events, the team were able to claim some good points.
