Before this weekend – October 27th – Rachel Wood had only ever run one Half-Marathon and that was in Coventry in 2010 where she finished 72nd overall in 93.14. But that time was dramatically revised in the Love Luton Half Marathon last Sunday.

Rachel took 12th place overall, set a new PB of 87.28, was First Woman, and, to top it all off, she ran a time which gives her automatic entry into the 2014 London Marathon. Rachel had missed out on the Club Draw for London Marathon places, but determined to get an entry, she went straight to Luton and achieved the qualification time there. Now the hard Training starts!!!

Accrington 10k

Nine Harriers went over to this annual 10k Road race which is by no means the easiest course to run and posted a V60 Age Group Category winner, Women’s Team First Prize, two season’s best and a PB.

First home was Matt Lalor in 2nd place overall (35.06) behind winner Jonathan Fletcher from Border in 34.52. Brian Fogarty, just back from his superb performance in the Ironman World Championships, took 5th place in 36.24 with Paul Guinan 7th in 36.32, just 8 seconds behind. V50 Phil Hall who competes for Blackburn on the Track took the Age Group Category win and 10th place in 37.35. In 27th place was V60 Evan Cook who also took the Age Group Category win with a good time of 40.38 to add to the a number of recent V60 wins in Races. Not far behind Evan came Sam McCreadie in 34th position (41.42) which on this Course is equal to running PB form. Paul Wilkinson who had also raced at Burnley in the Mid Lancs League the day before placed 92nd in 46.37 which was just 6 seconds outside his PB. No doubt that time is going to be revised down very quickly on this performance.

Ella Gregory (48.09) and Kaylie Panaro (48.21) were next home for the Club in 104th and 105th respectively.  Kaylie took 15 seconds off her PB which had been set on the flat Salford 10k, very unlike the undulating Accrington Course and said after the race that “I am pleased with yesterday’s result and it was quite an enjoyable run. I set off with Ella and managed to stick with her until the end.  I’ve done three 10k’s with Ella now and I have always tried to stick with her but never managed it.  Hopefully that time can come down a little more”. V65 Stuart Furness completed the day for the Club with a seasons best of 49.34 (116th).

EPIC EVENTS NIGHT RUNNER
HALLOWEEN HORROR

RIVINGTON 26 OCTOBER

There we were at Burnley on Saturday afternnon, looking for Andy Buttery and little did we know that he was winding up to race on Saturday night – in the dark!! He had been looking forward to running the Cross Country but had planned this Race for a while and unfortunately they clashed. In the event, Andy won the Race by nearly 5 minutes from Ian Greenwood of the Rossendale Triathlon Club in 2nd place.

After Andy’s first night race on Saturday up Rivington and took the win, 6.7miles (1145ft climb), he had this to say about the experience ” Quite a tough course skirting the tower and heading towards Winter Hill past the Two Lads. Rough and technical underfoot with a lot of climb so would certainly class it as fell and quite a challenge in the dark (although I do have exceptionally bright lights that help!). Strange in the dark, as you are never sure how much climbing is left with only being able to see 100metres ahead and not knowing the route, so think I ended up pushing a harder pace than I might have in daylight. It mean’t I was well clear after about half a mile and just kept going”.
