Eight intrepid Blackburn Harriers set off amongst 672 other runners for this years 2013 Three Peaks Race on a ‘bracing’ April Saturday. With prospects of snow on the Peaks and bragging rights at stake, it turned out to be good day. Rumour had it that Chris Barnes was running in fear of Helen Leigh!!
First Harrier home was Mat Nuttall who ran a well judged race, working his way through to finish in a good 60th place (3:40.29). Not far behind with fine runs came John Sutton 72nd (3:44.25); Gary Pearse 91st (3:48.49) and Chris Barnes 121st (3:53.08). There was a Richard Taylor beating in Chris by 6 seconds, but happily for Chris, it wasn’t our Richard!.
Special mention for Helen Leigh, for whom the description as ‘ strong and determined as a horse’ doesn’t quite do her justice. She had a cracking run, finishing 166th and just 39 seconds off breaking four hours (4:.00.39) and 11th Woman overall. Jonathon Bridge 175th (4:02.39) wasn’t far behind Helen. John Orrell was next in 454th (4:45.30) which represented a PB for him in the Race and he was delighted as you can imagine. Richard Taylor was our last runner home 604th (5:11.44) and sadly we don’t have a photo of him in the Race. The Race photographer was adamant that he missed Richard because he came past him in a blur!!
And the winner and last one home in the 2013 Blackburn Harriers Club Three Peaks Challenge Trophy with their magnificent Cups presented at the Indian Restaurant after the Race…………..well you’re just going to have to work that one out?
