Six hundred and sixty runners took part in this years Potteries Marathon with Blackburn Harrier Ben Fish amongst them. The Race is not the easiest of Marathons and is known to be quite hilly, so Ben’s run in winning the Race in a time of 2.26.14, a minute in front of 2nd placed previous Race Winner Ben Gamble, was an excellent performance by him.

Ben told the Club after the Race that “I knew the course would be hilly. I was looking forward to just racing it and I knew Ben Gamble would be going for the win too. After 6 miles I got a ten seconds gap and it was only by 16 miles that I started to get away. Steep descent and heat brought on cramp in last mile, otherwise was fine!”

The popular local Trawden 7 Race took place on Sunday July 5th with Harriers Andy Buttery and Gary Pearse competing. Andy came 5th in a time of 42.59 behind the winner who clocked 41.26. Andy was also the first vet home in the Race. V50 Gary took 21st place overall, 2nd V50 and in a time of 48.12.

Andy commented after the Race that “I was 5th overall today and first vet in a field that had some good local runners so was very happy with the result. The course was very dry and fast, with a length and type of terrain I enjoy so it was nice to feel a bit of form and have probably my best run for over two years”.

Just four Harriers in the Senior Race featuring just 86 runners with Allan Hartley leading the quartet home in 16th position (29.13). Amazingly, Evan Cook (V60) finished in 32nd spot with a time of 31.19 and yet was 4th V60 overall which shows there is real competition in that age bracket. Kaylie Panaro took 63rd with 35.05 and V60 George Woodburn 71st in a time of 36.06.

Danny told us that there “3 harriers at tockholes on thursday. Usual last minute registration crush in the pub to register but well worth it. New route this year, setting off from Sunnyhurst bandstand. Long climb to the max elevation over 2 miles. Circumnavigated the Moor and we all expected to climb to the Tower at some point but it never happened. You can tell from the photo who finished first (!) Paul Wilkinson pulled hamstring in the last half mile and had to hobble in. Lets hope its a quick recovery!”
