Saturday July 6th was the date of the Birmingham Uni Grand Prix featuring four athletes from Blackburn Harriers in 800m, 1500m and 3000m races. (RESULTS). First up was Dominic Walton going in the 800m Men’s B race featuring ten athletes. Dominic went into this race after suffering from a fall at the British Championships last weekend and had a very good race, clocking 1.48.75 – just two tenths outside his personal best. After the race, Dominic spoke to the Club about his race, saying that he was “Finally back under 1:49 with my second fastest time ever. I won’t be 100% satisfied until I achieve a time I think I’m capable of but I’m heading in the right direction. I’m running smarter and can still spot areas for improvement so the next few races will be very important. At the very least that time should mean I qualify for the British Champs next year which is always a bonus.” Also going over 800m was Ben Makin in Race 5 and running consistently with a time of 1.53. 21 in 4th place, Ben telling us afterwards that he “Got after the race, going out with the pacemaker, leaving me having too much left in the last 200 and left me too far out of the front guys to catch, still happy with a pb though, definitely a step in the right direction“. Over 1500m and it was the turn of Abigail Stratton in the Women’s B Race which was a confidence boost for her after having gone through a period of injuries. Clocking 4.32.28 in 12th spot, Abigail spoke to us about the night afterwards, telling us that she was “Really happy with the result as it shows I am heading in the right direction post injury, the time was very slow however I overcame a mental block which I have been fighting since coming back from injury. This has given me a good base to work from to head towards quicker times in the next couple of races.” Final race of the night for Blackburn Harriers athletes came in the 3000m in which Matt Ramsden was hoping to improve his personal best which he did in style, knocking 16 seconds off his best to finish in 5th place with a new PB of 8.04.65. After the race had finished Chris told us about the race commenting “I’ve always enjoyed this race, even though it’s very tough. It was a very good field today. It was an amazing time from Chris Holdsworth. Don’t know how he does it. I went into it wanting to get under 1hr 30 mins and managed a 1hr 28 mins and finished 8th and 1st Vet45. I’m pleased with that. I got a good training day out of it as well. Well done to Stephen Hall as well. We had a good tussle all the way round. It was worth getting out of bed for in the end.” Stephen added his thoughts about the day telling us “I’m somewhat disappointed, I was hoping for around the 1.25 mark but wasn’t feeling great and my legs just gave up on me around ten miles in. Up until then it was a great battle with Chris but he dropped me on the lenches climb and off he went!
