The Mid Lancs Cross Country League started off at Hyndburn this year on a good day weather wise for racing and saw some good performances by the Harriers.

Starting for the Club in the U11 Girls were Eleesha Charnley; Leah Hoole; Kate Cookson; Rose Stancliffe and Eleanor Allsop. Eleesha led the girls home finishing in a really strong 6th position (8.57) followed by Leah in 16th (9.34) – Kate  25th (9.51) – Rose 38th (10.08) and Eleanor 47th in 10.23. In the U11 Boys Race featuring 66 runners Harvey Ashworth made his debut finishing 12th overall in a time of 8.13 with Rory Treare in 26th place (9.03).

Amy Davies moved up from the U11’s to U13’s this year and ran pretty good to finish 4th in the fifty one strong field in a time of 10.22 – the race being won by Jasmine Jolly in 10.00. Emily Warren was next in for the Harriers in 14th place (11.17) followed by another debutant for the Club – Charlotte Collin who finished 47th (13.45). In the U13 Boys, Jamie Teare continued his good start to the Cross Country season placing 11th overall out of 56 runners in a time of 12.25 – the race being won by Samuel Almond in 11.41. Daniel Brown in his first outing in Cross Country finished in 36th place (14.22) and Anthony Beresford making his debut as well finished 50th in 16.01. The three lads combined to finish 7th Team overall.

SONY DSCIn the U15 Girls, the Club had two runners with Megan Clarkson having a good run to finish 4th overall in 12.53 and Hannah Cookson in 7th place with a solid run (13.23). Jack Wilkinson ran solidly in the U15 Boys finishing 23rd (17.13) in the 41 strong field. New member Aleena Awan ran her debut for the Club in the U17 Women’s Race finishing 8th in 20.42 and there were also debuts for two U17 Men with Marco Maggio taking 26th spot in a time of 26.14 and Huzaifa Hussain 30th in 28.50.

 In the Senior Women’s Race, won impressively by Rebecca Robinson the first Harrier home was Laura Hesketh who worked her way through the field to finish 23rd overall in 27.00. Supporting Laura for the Team, which finished 25th out of 36 Teams, were Louise McCauley 96th in 31.35; Carol Cookson placing 122nd (34.23) and Alison Armour in 129th (35.45).

V40 Mat Nuttall has led from the front at the start of this years Cross Country season, leading home the Harriers for a 2nd place team position at the Red Rose Fixture and 2nd Team again in the Mid Lancs. Two hundred and 96 runners lined up in the Men’s senior race with Mat finishing 13th (37.19) and 2nd V40 to boot. U20 Jack Hindle had a good race to take 20th place and 2nd U20 in a time of 37.52. Just two places behind came Chris Davies in 22nd (38.07) and a further four places back in 26th was V40 Andy Buttery with a time of 38.36.

V40 Mark Chippendale placed 30th in 38.48, U20 Joe Campbell placed 40th in 39.41 followed by Chris Barnes in 41st (39.43) to pack really well for the Club. V50 Chris Balderson finished 89th (43.01) – Mark Emmett making his return to racing after a number of years out of the sport with a solid run took 101st position (43.23) – U20 Morgan Philips placed 106th (43.40) – Andy Heys took 125th spot with a time of 44.49 and Mark Bleasdale breathing right down his neck in 126th place (44.50). V40 Allan Hartley finished 144th (45.39) – John Cookson came in 175th (47.20) and Richard Taylor 244th (53.46).

Accrington 10k – October 26th

Three hundred and thirty seven runners at this years very windy Accy 10k and amongst them ten athletes from Blackburn Harriers. Ben Fish led the Race out and won it by a minute (32.52) from Alasdair Mcleod of Shettleston AC (33.51).

Ben led the Harriers to the Team 1st Prize as well with a fine run from Mat Nuttall, placing 5th and first Vet overall and first V45 in a time of 34.58. Having led the Harriers home at Hyndburn the day before at the Mid Lancs Cross Country fixture, this run capped off a very good weekend for Mat. Not far behind Mat was V40 Shaun Livesey in 9th (36.15) and Chris Davies – (who also ran at Hyndburn the day before) – finishing 11th (36.25).

Evan Cook made it four wins on the day for the Club when he finished 48th in a time of 42.45 to win the V60 Category. Next home was Kaylie Panaro in 123rd place ( 47.43) followed V60 Peter Lynch 173rd (51.09) with V65 Stuart Furness one place back in 174th (51.35). David Morris came in 262nd (58.58).

Green Drive Five – October 19th

The Green Drive Five which also hosted the Lancashire Five Mile Road Championships had two hundred and thirty four runners competing of which one hundred and fifty five entered the Lancashire Championships.

The Race, won by Robb Jebb in 26.17 featured five Blackburn Harriers – Andy Buttery; Laura Hesketh; John Cookson; Carol Cookson and Evan Cook.

Andy finished 9th overall and won the V40 1st Prize in a time of 28.39. Laura finished in 49th spot (33.29) and was 5th Woman overall. John came in 51st (33.55) – Evan  placed 58th (33.54) and was 3rd V60. Carol Cookson set a new PB by one and half minutes when she finished 139th in 41.33. Matt Lalor who runs for the Harriers on the Track, competed for Barlick and finished 4th in 27.21.

In the Championships, Andy Buttery took Gold for the V40’s and Evan Cook Bronze in the V60’s. In the Team Race, the Harriers finished 8th out 27.

Thirty seven youngsters lined up for the Junior Mile Race with Kate Cookson finishing 32nd overall and 1st in the Female 8yr age category with an excellent time of 7.21.
