What a fantastic Performance by V70 Mike Hazlewood at this years European Masters Athletic Indoor Championships In Ancona. Mike became a double European Champion in the Shot Putt and Javelin.
Mike had contested the British Championships earlier in the year where he won 4 Gold Medals and a Silver. Now he is the European Champion in the Shot Putt with a throw of 12.22m and in the Javelin with a throw of 37.65m. He also won Bronze in the Discus with 35.34m, placed 6th in the Weight (7.26kg) with 15.64m and 7th in the Hammer with 39.95m.

Rain and wind greeted the athletes in Blackpool at the first fixture in this years Mid Lancs Track & Field League. Although a little earlier in the season than usual, there were still a good number of Blackburn Harriers out competing.

The rain didn’t deter U15 Charlotte Williams who not only won the event, but went to the top of the National Rankings and broke the Club Record to boot winning her event with a throw of 50.55, just 18cms in front of second place. Great reward for all the work put in over the winter. Charlotte told the Club “I’m happy I got a new pb and got to number 1 in the uk in my first competition. after all the hard work in winter it’s paid off, this good start to the season will hopefully result in many new pb’s and good performances“.
Staying with the Throwers, Simon Brown took 2nd place in the Senior Shot Putt (10.99m) and won the Discus with a throw of 33.90m. Tony Balko placed 3rd in the Javelin with 28.86m, 2nd in the Discus (26.39m) and 4th in the Hammer (32.19m). Anthony Kent who is currently 3rd in the National Rankings for the Discus won his event with 34.37m, took 3rd in the Shot Putt with a throw of 10.83m and 3rd in the Hammer (36.45m). U17 Jacob Roberts currently stands at number 2 in the Hammer National Rankings and he won this event with a throw of 61.00m. U17 Lucas Davies placed 6th in the Discus with a throw of 21.46m and 8th in the Javelin (24.74m). New member Leon Spink finished 6th in the Shot Putt with 5.93m. U17 Sam Pearson-Moore started off the season with a solid 3rd placed 34.53m in the Javelin. Rebecca Orrell currently at number six in the National Rankings (Hammer) won her event with a throw of 40.91m. U17 Jessica Kit in her first outing for the Club placed 6th in the Javelin with a throw of 19.77m. U13 Abigail Brown in her first ever outdoor competiton for the Club did well in throwing 13.30m in the Javelin. U13 Myah Booth threw a massive new PB when she finished 2nd in the Shot Putt with 8.41m, over 2metres better than her previous best and then backed that up with another 2nd place in the Javelin (20.52m).
It was a one-two in the U15 Boys Discus with Alex Bernstein winning the event (24.61m) and new member Cameron Harris placing 2nd with a throw of 20.61m. Cameron followed that up with a win in the Javelin throwing a distance of 32.25m and in turn Alex won the Hammer with a throw of 28.36m.
Marco Maggio ran the Senior 800m Race in a time of 2.17.20 (6th) having gone off a bit too quick on the first lap. Chris Davies also had a run out in this coming in 7th (2.20.80). U17 Lewis Bernstein was out for his first race of the outdoor season finishing 5th in the 400m in a time of 57.40. Another new member – Ben Whittaker – came in 4th in the U15 Boys 100m (13.60) and then contested the Long Jump placing 7th (3.82m) followed by a 1.25m High Jump (5th) – whilst – U15 Jamie Teare ran a time of 31.60 in the 200m (5th), ran the 1500m (5th) in 4.58.20, a couple of seconds outside his PB and rounded off the day with a 1.35m High Jump in 3rd spot. U13 Ethan Barbarewicz ran his first outdoor race on the track for the Harriers in the 100m (15.90) for 5th place. Ethan then had a battle over 800m with Kyle Pomfret, with Kyle just edging it in 11th place (2.50.5) and Ethan 12th in 2.51.10. Kyle then went on to win the U13 Boys Discus with 13.46m and took 4th place in the Javelin with 18.31m. U13 George Whittaker placed 10th out 16 in the U13 Boys Long Jump (3.34m). Katie Buckingham ran in the Senior Women’s 400m taking 4th place in 65.10.
Bottom of age U17 Chloe Bleeks was just outside her PB by two tenths when she finished 5th in the 100m (14.30) and went on to place 4th in the 300m (46.80) which was a new PB. Also bottom of age U17 Hannah Cookson had a good day winning her 300m Heat in 45.10 and then running 2nd in the 800m (2.32.40). Recent new member Liberty Thompson (U15) took on the 800m coming home in 10th place with a time of 2.50.60 whilst U15 Amy Davies finished 4th in the 1500m (5.24.50). U13 Hollie Cubbon ran her first ever 1500m on the Track and ran solidly for a time of 5.42.70 in 4th place. Eleesha Charnley was one of 29 Long Jumpers in the U13 age category and finished in 14th place with a distance of 3.55m.
