Blackburn Harriers Matthew Heywood was taking part in the Hammer competition at the Alan Connie Samrock Invitational on day one of the three day meet – over March 20 – 22nd. Competing for Mount Olive University in Amercia, Matthew started the year competing in Weight (15.88kg) competitions – throwing 15.59m (5th) on January 18th; 14.92m (5th)  on January 10th; 15.07m (9th) on January 24th; 15.19m (5th) on February 7th; 15.61m (6th) on February 14th and set a new PB of 16.84 on February 23rd. Matthew’s first competition of the year in the Hammer (7.26kg) took place on March 7th where he placed 2nd with a throw of 50.13m. His second Hammer competition saw him set a new PB of 51.29m as he came 3rd – throwing some 70cms better than his previous best. Following the competiton Matthew commented to the Harriers that it “Feels amazing to finally have a new PB. Still early in the season so hopefully I can keep pushing.” (RESULTS).

In another country – but not as far away – Helen Leigh was continuing her brilliant form as she contested for her team – Inverness Harriers – at the Scottish National Road Relays Championships on Saturday March 22nd in Livingstone. The team, featuring Caitlyn Heggoe on the 1st Leg (18.14), Helen on Leg 2 (36.43); Jenny Bannerman on Leg 3 (18.26) and Megan Keith on the Final Leg (31.59) took the Gold Medal in the Women’s 4-Stage, beating Edinburgh in 2nd and Central AC in 3rd. Following the Championships Helen spoke to the Harriers about the day and her feelings about winning yet anoither National Championships – and this after winning the British Women’s V40 Cross Country Championships she told us that it was “Ace to be part of a strong ladies team winning the National Road relays yesterday. On a really hot day I ran the second long leg which felt much harder than all the cross countries! Anchored home by Megan Keith who ran away to victory on the last lap“.(RESULTS)
