The 2024 Northern U17, U15 & U13 Outdoor Championships took place at Derby over the weekend of August 10th & 11th. In the U17 Men’s 800m, Blackburn Harriers Oliver Gill and Sam Aspey lined up in the Heats – Oliver qualifying from Heat 1 in 2nd place (2.04.32) alongside Sam who qualifed from Heat 2 in 4th (2.04.14). In the Final just a few hours after running the Heats, Oliver was involved in a real battle before taking the win and the Northern title by the thickness of a vest, crossing the line in 2.03.52 from Tynedale’s Magnus Riddell in 2nd (2.03.53) – Sam clocking 2.07.38 in 8th.

First year U15 Millie Jordan was racing against second year girls in the Final of the 800m and had a good run to place 6th overall in a time of 2.19. 59. In the Sprints U17 Daniel Nuttall ran 23.37 in Heat 3, just missing out on qualification for the Final and on Sunday clocked 12.15 in 7th spot in the 100m Heat 3. Dana Juma was entred into the U15 Girls 100m and 200m – qualifying for the semi-final in the 100m with 13.72 in Heat 3, after which she ran 13.77 in the semi-final. In the 200m Dana clcoked 29.10 in Heat 5. Tamzin Osborne took the 2nd medal of the weekend for the Hrriers as she cleared 2.90m in the U17 Women’s Pole Vault in 3rd place. Dana Juma finished her weekend off in style – placing 8th out of a Pool of 19 in the U15 Girls Shot Putt, setting a new PB of 9.26m.

Bury Athletic’s Track was once again the venue for the Tuesday night meetings usually held at Trafford – on August 6th. (RESULTS). The night got off to a flyer with Blackburn Harriers first year U15 Jack Baranowski who had recently won Silver at the English Schools Championships at 800m. The only U15 in the race – the others covering U20, U23 and Senior athletes – Jack ran himself a new PB and broke his own Club Record – winning the race in a time of 1.58.75 which takes him to number 4 in the National Rankings. Ben Fish lined up in the A race over 3000m clocking a seasons best time of 8.42.90 in 7th spot overall and 1st V40. U17’s George Ramsden and Logan McCredie went in Heat 3 of the 800m – George running 2.08.66 in 7th and Logan 2.10.80 in 8th spot. U20 Jack Lamb took on the 1500m in race 2, placing 5th in a time of 4.12.99 followed by U17 Ethan Cutler winning race 5 of the 1500m in a time of 4.45.10 – his first time over the distance. On the Field Tony Balko competed firstly in the Hammer (5kg) with 37.63m, just shy of his personal best and then in the Javelin (600g) with a new PB throw of 27.34m.

At Bury again on Saturday August 10th for the BMC meeting in which a number of Blackburn Harriers were competing in 800, 1500 and 5000m races. (RESULTS). First up for the Harriers was U20 Ben Stratton in the 800m coming home in 5th place clocking 1.54.20. Abigail Stratton went in the 1500m to take 6th place after a strong last 300m to clock a time of 4.30.27. Ben Makin also took on the 1500m coming across the finish line in 4.01.40 (10th). Dexta Thompson was just outside his personal best as he placed 9th, also in the 1500m, with a time of 3.47.21. In the next 1500m race, Matt Ramsden came home in 2nd spot with a new PB time of 3.47.08, less than two tenths behind the winner – Andrew Milligan (3.46.90). Final race of the night – Women’s 5000m A race – saw Isabel Holt in only her second ever race over the distance on the track, have a fine run, reducing her track 5000m time from 17.20.02 down to a new PB time of 16.42.51 in 10th position.
