Andy commented after the Race that he  “was a little disappointed with my time as I was aiming for sub 75, but considering I haven’t done many tempo runs or any longer races for a while it was a a solid result with more to come. I felt good early on and thought I was going to have a good one, but started to find it really hard from about 9miles and had to dig in. Pleased that I kept pushing to the end despite slowing more than anything really. It’s good to get a half under my belt again as I always find they make your next 10k seem really short!’

Chris Barnes was out again on this one as was John Orrell with Chris finishing in 32nd place (1.45.47) and John in 76th with a time of 2.18.42.

Post Race John shared his thoughts about the day and said ” Not the best of starts for me in this race, which follows the tourist path to the top of Nab Scar, skirts Heron Pike, Great Rigg and tops out on Fairfield summit. The race started at 12.05 but I was stuck in traffic and only arrived at 12. It was 5 minutes before the off and I was still in civilian clothes, had to abandone the car, change into Blackburn Harriers uniform and sprint across the showground to registration. Not surprisingly it was shut. Luckily Pete Bland took pity and gave me a late entry. Phew, made it to the start line with only seconds to spare, but still trying to pin on my number and fasten my laces. Not easy! I heard the words full kit and I thought, yep got it. Then I heard emergency food. Oh ‘eck, I’d left my Kendal Mint Cake on the front seat of the car. Panic!!

The B of the bang had gone and so had the rest of the field, as I turned around and sprinted (2nd time today) across the arena in the opposite direction. I tripped over the PA system cable, tangled with a rope barrier and crashed into a spectator before I reached Pete Bland’s van and grabbed a gel (paid for later). Back through the crowds, mind that speaker, well and truly last by now, and the rest of the day was spent playing catch up. I caught some of the back markers along the track to Rydal Hall and made up more places by Fairfield summit. I felt good over the top, past Hart Crag, Dove Crag and was catching a chap from Ambleside until I made a stupid route choice which put me off line and at the wrong end of a vertical drop. I know this spot is supposed to have a tree you can cling to, but there was no tree. An abandoned attempt at rock climbing got me into difficulty, so I had to back track, then I stumbled across that tree and navigated across a different rock face. Back on track, or so I thought, until I swung right on what looked a good path through bracken, only to end up waist deep in the stuff.

By now I’d lost the plot and a few of those places I’d made up, so wished I’d settled for a burger and doughnuts after my late arrival instead. Finished 76th out of 104 starters in a time of 2.18.42 for the 9 mile and 3002 ft ascent race, but of course I ran much further than everybody else!
