It was a very warm night indeed at the Trafford AC Grand Prix on Tuesday July 19th. Four Blackburn Harriers were entered with Tim Raynes and Joe Monk contesting the 3000m with a view to running PB’s as was Joe Howe in the 1500m and Sam Pearson-Moore in the U17 Javelin competition.
In the 3000m Race Tim Raynes had a great Race setting a new personal best by a huge 21 seconds finishing 9th of 22 runners in an excellent time of 8.49.53. Pleased with his effort on the night, Tim told the Club that “Given the hot conditions, I knew that it would be a tough race (and so it proved to be). I was happy to get into a good rhythm early on into the race, but slightly disappointed not to be able push on in the middle stages of the race. I felt quite strong in the closing stages of the race though, and can’t be too unhappy to come away with a PB. Well done to Joe, who had a great run and will no doubt be setting more PBs across the various distances in the coming weeks.”

Joe Monk also achieved his PB in the same 3000m Race. Having wanted to go under 9 minutes for a while he came home in 15th with a new PB time of 8.58.66, some 8 seconds faster than his previous best. Commenting after the Race Joe said “The race went well, better than I thought as the conditions made it really tough. Really pleased to run sub 9, been gearing my training towards this and happy that it’s paid off. Also well done to Tim on another strong run, great to have top quality of runners within the club“.
Joe Howe ran in the 1500m and just missed out on a new personal best by two seconds running a time of 4.22.29. Joe has a very positive approach to his athletics and told the Club that he was “was actually a bit disappointed with the time because I thought that I was capable of running faster. However I know that I’ve been training well and that the times will come eventually so I’m not too downhearted. It’s definitely given me something to build on and encouraged me to keep putting in the effort in training”.
Third new PB of the night took place in the Field Events when Sam Pearson-Moore – set a new personal best in the U17 Javelin when he added nearly four metres to his previous best and posted a throw of 43.22m. An added bonus for Sam was getting his photo taken with Jessica Ennis, the current Olympic Champion. If that doesn’t inspire you, nothing will.
