FRA Junior Championships 2013 Round One

A great day for the Annual Rivington Pike Fell Race. Plenty of sunshine, plenty of runners and lots of really good competition. Thirty five youngsters kicked off the Under 8’s Race with just 16 secs seperating the first five. Matthew Cubbon in his first race for the Club did really well coming in 3rd overall (4:28). Matthew was followed home by Kate Cookson in her first race for the Club in 23rd (5:21) and just behind her was Alayna Irvine in 25th place (5:30).

Next up for the Harriers was the Under 12’s Race which featured 86 runners. Another debutant for the Club – Daniel Cubbon – finished in 33rd place (12:06). Hannah Cookson came home in 53rd place overall (12:49).

The Under 14’s Boys & Girls mixed Race gave the Club its first winner of the day with a cracking run by Grace Handley the first girl home and 10th overall (15:28) in a field of 58. Grace was backed up with good performances by Natalya Irvine 22nd (16:45); Deni Impett 31st (17:45); Megan Clarkson 48th (19:33) and Esme Pearse 54th (21:42).

Last of the Junior Races were the Under 16’s mixed Boys & Girls providing the Harriers with their second outright winner of the day with a really fine run by Liz Greenwood to win the Girls Race in 13th place overall (15:10).  Jack Hindle also had a good run to finish 5th overall (13:55), Morgan Philips was 20th (15:44); Phoebe Howe 33rd and 8th Girl (18:14). In the Senior Mens Race 312 Men and Women lined up making an impressive long line in the ascent up to the Pike. Tom Cornthwaite running for Northumberland Fell Runners and Gary Priestley for Salford Harriers (both 2nd Claim on the Track for Blackburn), treated us to a cracking Race with just 3 seconds seperating them at the finish – Tom (18:04) edging out Gary (18:07). Another 2nd Claim member for Blackburn – Josh Tighe – and again running for Northumberland Fell Runners ran a good race to finish 6th overall (18:50)

Zac Howe led the rest of the Harriers home in 30th place – 6th U20M (20:49); John Sutton 36th (21:11); Joseph Howe 61st and 6th U18M (22:36); Matt Nuttall – running with a titanium plate in his shoulder having broken his collar bone in three places 91st (23:33); John Cookson 165th (26:21). With Kate and Hannah Cookson both competing and siblings Zac, Jospeh and Phoebe Howe also competing, that meant we had two families on the day who eached turned out three competitors in the different age groups.

V60 Stalwart Stuart Furness came 199th (27:55) and Lisa Nuttall – who smiled all the way up and all the way down – finished 300th (34:35)
