First League weekend of this years Track & Field Season got underway last weekend with the Mid Lancs League at Blackpool. One of the highlights of the day was Charlotte Taylor – bottom of age – having run 2:44.20 for 9th place in the U15 800m then turned that round with a storming run in the U15 Girls 300m finishing 2nd in 46.40sec moving from 3rd to 2nd just before the line. A really determined and gutsy run.
There were other fine performances to Paul Wilkinson won the Senior Men’s Javelin with 33.51m followed by 8th place in the Shot (7.46m) and 4th place in the Discus (21.91). Ever improving Cameron Massey competed in the 200m finishing 2nd in 25.90sec, the same time given to the winner and then in the Shot 5th (7.64m) in an U15 Boys Shot event which was won by Blackburn’s Connor Davison (9.38m) who then went onto 2nd place in the Discus with 24.94m and 2nd place in the Hammer with 25.08m. On Sunday 28th April, the first round fixture of the new Youth Development League (Upper Age Group) took place at Ellesmere Port. Another windy and cold day, but that didn’t dampen the spirits with a number of Pb’s for Polly Pearse Pole Vault and Hurdles; Rebecca Orrell in the Hammer; Katie Buckingham in the 800m.
Jake Almond (U17) who had competed in the 100m/200m double on Saturday at Blackpool came out again in the double on Sunday winning both ‘B’ U20 Men’s 100m and 200m with 12.20sec and 24.6 sec and jumped 4.85m in the Long Jump. Joseph Howe (U17) had a really good run in the Men’s U20 800m winning the ‘A’ Race in 2:11.8, in horrible windy conditions. Phoebe Howe backed up her 300m run from Saturday with another good run for 3rd in the ‘A’ Race (46.3sec). Connor Makin won the U20 110m Men’s Hurdles (20.5sec) and the 400m Hurdles (58.5sec) without really being pushed.
Jack Vickery won the U20 Men’s Hammer (47.92m) and the U20 Men’s Discus (22.72m). Nathan Billington took 2nd place in the U17 Men’s Hammer (32.07); 4th in the Discus (17.23m) and 5th in the Shot (8.79m). Rebecca Orrell followed up her Pb on Saturday at Blackpool with another PB in the U17 Hammer (35.74m) and also came 2nd in the Discus and 3rd in the Javelin.
There were lots of good performances by all those in the Team and not just those highlighted above. Nervous but committed, Jacinta Davison and Holly Ballantyne in the 1500m ran into the wind and Rhiannon Wickham in the 3000m ran a really good even paced Race – Roxanne; Sophie, Rebecca (Sullivan) Ben, Joe, Sam, Olivia, Gareth all competed really well for the Team. Finishing 2nd overall in the fixture which was won by East Cheshire Harriers by a small margin of 22 points augers well for the rest of the season.
