A chilly day greeted the seven teams who contested Fixture 2 in this years YDL (Lower Age Group) fixture at Witton Park. The Harriers came 2nd, again to an impressive Isle of Man Team and are now 2nd in the League table overall and in with a chance of promotion to League One as the top two teams are promoted at the end of the season.

Because of the holidays, the Club was missing a number of athletes and the Team did extremely well to finish in 2nd place on the day, a day which saw the Team register 17 individual event wins plus one of the Relays, six second places, 10 third places and a staggering 30 new PB’s.

Amongst the winners on the day were Nick Massey who won the U15 100m ‘A” Race in a new PB time of 12.0sec down from 12.4 and added another win in the 80m Hurdles in 11.8sec before adding more points with a 3rd place in the High Jump (1.45m). Emily Warren had a great day winning the U15 200m in a new PB time of 27.3, then equaled her 75m Hurdles best of 11.9 when she won that and in winning the Long Jump, increased her best distance to a new PB of 4.47m.

Maddie Elliott who ran a very promising 3000m the week before set a new PB by three seconds in the 1500m winning in 5.06.0 which could prove to be significant in the 3000m races of the future for her. Maddie also showed her versatility in winning the 75m Hurdles in a new PB time of 14.1 cutting half a second off her best time. U13 Myah Booth also had a cracking day with a win in the 70m Hurdles in a new PB of 12.8, down from her previous best of 13.06. In addition she set a new PB in the Shot Putt of 6.27m and in the Javelin, another PB with 15.02m up from 13.66m, her previous best.

Leon Thomas continues to impress with another win in the U13 ‘A’ 800m, winning in a time of 2.35.8. Eloise Littlefair is showing a good return to form after her injury issues winning the U15 Shot Putt in a new PB throw of 10.26m, the Hammer ‘B’ in 33.16 which was a new PB by over 5 metres and won the ‘B’ Discus with a throw of 21.80m. Charlotte Williams won the U15 Hammer by a long way with a throw of 33.40m and is clearly warming to this event after throwing 35m at the County Championships the week before as well as setting a new PB in the Discus with 24.01m. Jamie Teare set a new PB in the U13 75m Hurdles coming down from 15.0 sec to a new PB of 13.8sec when he finished in 2nd place. In the 1500m he was just one second off his PB in finishing 3rd in 5.07.6.

In the Boys Throws Anthony Kent (U15) had a double win in the Hammer with a huge new PB of 29.61m – up from 21.68m – and in the Discus (24.07m) as well as setting another PB in the Shot Putt (8.97m). Lucas Davies followed suit winning the U15 ‘B’ Discus in a new PB of 22.29, over two metres further than his previous best and added a 2nd place 7.16m Shot Putt to help add more points to the Team’s total. U13 Amy Davies chopped four seconds off her 1200m time to set a new PB of 4.10.40 placing 3rd in the race.

There were plenty more PB’s along the way. Eleesha Charnley ran 22.4 in the U13 150m and 2.55.2 in the 800m, registering a third PB of the day with a Long Jump of 3.53m. Ben Cecil also set three new PB’s in the U15 200m (27.2); the 300m in 43.2 and the Long Jump with 4.56m. Hannah Cookson took a great big three seconds off her 800m PB when she ran 2.25.5 and then added a win in the U15 Girls Long Jump (4.09m) before setting another new PB in the 300m with a 3rd placed 45.9sec.

U13 Solomon Brown equaled his PB when 2nd in 80m Hurdles (15.9sec) adding a 3rd place in the Long Jump with 3.98m. Sam Farnworth took a good 2nd place in the U13 High Jump with 1.25m. U15 Chloe Bleeks set a new PB in the 100m (3rd) cutting nearly a second off to record new time of 14.1sec. There were new PB’s for Marcus Grace in the U15 100m ‘B’ Race in a time of 14.5sec and for Kieran Carroll in the U13 Javelin with a three and half metre improvement to 16.54m in placing 3rd. Charlie Obank took 3rd spot in the U15 1500m in 4.58.9 and Harry Singh also had a 3rd place finish in the U13 High Jump (1.30m). Harry Jackson set himself a new PB in reducing his U13 75m Hurdles time from 16.7 sec to 16.5.

Over at Sportscity on Saturday night Rob Warner  – who has already run 3.58.01 in winning the 1500m at Loughborough, 8.39.66 for the 3000m and 33.17.76 for the 1000m in the early part of the season  – was contesting the 1500m and set himself a new PB of 3.54.26 finishing 5th overall in the 14 strong Race.

Rob spoke to the Club afterwards and said that he was “Quite happy with the race, was in a decent position for most of it and coming into the last lap, wanted to be able to pick it up more in the last 300 but didn’t have the speed just yet! Two seconds quicker than I ran there last year though so it all seems promising!”
