First Race in the Astley Park Trail Series this year took place on Wednesday May 8th and saw a number of younger Harriers as well as Seniors competing in cold and windy conditions.

In the Senior Race of 106 runners – won by Luke Betts (23.37) –  the Harriers highest placed finisher was Alan Hartley in 25th place in a time of 28.52. Next home was V60 Evan Cook in 49th spot (31.25 and 2nd V60 overall. George Woodburn – who has been battling with injuries – took the 3rd V60 place with 35.32 and 88th overall, whilst David Morris finished 99th overall in 42.51.

The Junior Race actually attracted more runners than the Senior one with 131 youngsters and some good performances taking into account their ages and experience. Megan Clarkson (U17) who has been out injured for quite a while had a run out here to test herself and ran a solid time of 5.50 for the mile in 15th place overall. Next home was U13 Amy Davies (19th) in 5.57 with U13 Daniel Brown in 27th (6.11) and u13 Hollie Cubbon 32nd (6.21).

U11 Kyle Pomfret had a good run to finish 41st in 6.33 along with another U11 Harrier – Saul Sharp (9yrs of age) who also ran solidly for 62nd place in a time of 7.21. Nine year old Isabelle Hartley was the 5th 9yr old and finished 103rd in 7.40. 7yr olds Hannah Davies (Amy’s sister) finished 105th and Lulu Sharp (Saul’s sister) came in 120th.

At the Gt Hambledon Hill Race on Sunday May 3rd, V50’s MIchael Toms and Gary Pearse had pretty good races to finish 1st and 2nd V50 respectively with Michael in 9th place (44.06) and Gary in 12th (44.29). Allan Hartley took 48th spot in 49.43 in the 183 strong field.

Josh Boyle ran two Fell Races recently and won both which was a tremendous performance. At the Foe Edge Race on May 6th 14yr old Josh won in a time of 33.56, just holding off Darren Kay by three seconds. There was a top 10 finish for Tom Cubbon (10th) in 39.54 whilst Danny Teare also ran in the Race and placed 34th in 48.38.

The second win for Josh came at the U16 Race at Coiners where again he was the winner by just three seconds from Nathan Smith – Full Results HEREAnna Lonsdale also competed at Coiners in the U14 Race and finished 46th overall in a time of 25.18 – Full Results HERE

Seventy one runners lined up at the Orchan Rocks Fell Race  – April 28th – and amongst them was Chris Barnes who came in 14th overall in 25.48 and Tom Cubbon in 21st (26.39).

Laura Hesketh who runs for the Hrriers on the Track went after a PB in the first race of the John Carr 5k Series and got it which was a cracking performance. Speaking to the Club after the Race, Laura said that My aim for this race was to try & dip under 19 minutes so I was over the moon when I managed to shave a second off my PB which I set in 2011 to run a time of 18:45. Hoping to bring that time down further over the summer”.
