Warm sunshine kicked the day off at the final fixture of this years Mid Lancs T & F League at Leigh with a number of athletes anticipating winning some Medals. Twenty one Blackburn Harriers competed on the day producing a good few wins, a dozen new personal bests and Medals.
RESULTS
One of the highlights featured Chris Davies chopping 18 seconds off his 3000m best time to set a new PB of 9.33.80. His run was all the more impressive as he ran the whole race on his own, sadly because there weren’t many entries.
U13 Nicky Saunders also had a massive new PB in the U13 Javelin adding nearly seven metres to her previous best when winning with a throw of 23.14m. Nicky then set another new PB in the Discus placing 2nd with a throw of 21.64, an improvement of two and half metres and then made it Gold, Silver and Bronze when finishing 3rd in the Shot Putt (6.83m). Izzy Thompson, who has recently joined the Club maintained the run of PB’s when winning the U13 Shot Putt with a throw of 8.25m, a new PB by half a metre, improving by nearly half a metre in the Discus winning with a new PB of 24.98m and finished off the day with a Bronze in the Javelin (21.51m). Danielle Probert, another U13 took on the Javelin finishing 5th with 12.41m and just missed out on a PB in the Shot Putt with 4.29m. U13 Emma Love just missed out on a Bronze in the High Jump finishing 4th with a clearance of 1.25m, the same height as third and went on to place 9th out of 24 in the Long Jump with 3.85m. Holly Cubbon picked up a 2nd place in the U13 1500m running a time of 5.34.40.
U15 Eloise Littlefair was among the Medal action too taking Bronze in the Javelin with a throw of 28.67m, winning the Discus with a throw of 24.63m and the Shot Putt (10.73m) giving her two Gold Medals and a Bronze. U15 Liberty Thompson set a new PB in the Long Jump with 3.13m, was just outsider her 800m PB coming home in 4th spot (2.42.50) and again in the 200m, just short of her PB in her Heat with a time of 32.40.
U13 Boys Kieran Carroll pick up a Bronze in the Javelin with a throw of 23.78m – George Whittaker finishing 4th (21.73m) and Kyle Taylor-Pomfret 6th with a throw of 18.78m. Kyle then set a new PB in the Discus when 3rd with a throw of 16.01 and a second new PB in the Shot Putt by 3cms placing 6th with 5.65m. Kieran matched that with a new PB of his own in the Shot Putt by 7cms in 5th position (6.31m) and reached a distance of 11.87m (4th) in his first ever attempt at Discus. George came 7th in the Long Jump with a distance of 3.44m and equal 5th in the 100m with a time of 14.50 and a new PB by three tenths.
For U15 Alex Bernstein it was Gold all the way for him winning the Hammer with a throw of 36.98m and the Discus with 30.83m and afterwards he spoke to the Club saying “I was very pleased to win two Gold medals today at the Mid Lancs Track & Field final competition of 2016. Although under pressure in the Discus, I managed to throw my second best distance of the season just in time to win the Gold medal on my last throw. The moral of the story is to never give up. Well done to all the other Blackburn Harriers who competed today at Leigh”. U15’s Matt Ramsden and Leon Thomas were less than a second off setting new PBs. Matt, whose 1500m PB is 4.39.1 ran 4.40.6 to place 3rd in his 1500m whilst Leon whose 800m PB is 2.19.4 placed 5th in a time of 2.20.3. Very good running from both lads. Ben Whittaker won his heat of the 200m in a time of 26.30, placing 5th overall and placed 7th after the Heats in the 100m in a time of 12.90.
U17 Anthony Kent was sadly the only U17 Hammer Thrower on the day but that didn’t stop him performing really well, throwing a distance of 43.15m. He then won the Discus with 37.83m and finished the day off with a Silver in the Shot Putt (10.91m). Lucas Davies set a new PB by a metre in the Javelin placing 5th with (26.83m), just missed a PB in the Discus (5th) with 23.28m and finished off with another new PB in the Shot Putt (3rd) with a throw of 7.36m. Leon Spink placed 4th in the Shot Putt (6.15m).
In the Senior Men’s Throws, Connor Davison (U20), Simon Brown and Tony Balko were all in action. Connor took 5th in the Javelin (28.88m), 7th in the Discus (21.84m) and 7th again in the Shot Putt with 8.60m. Tony, who is getting ready for the European Masters Championships, took 2nd in the Hammer with 30.69m, 4th in the Discus with 27.79m and 6th in the Shot Putt with 9.49m. Simon meanwhile, won the Discus with a throw of 36.01m and came 2nd in the Shot Putt with 11.35m.
