Another great day for two members of the Harriers Hammer Group. Rebecca Orrell and Jacob Roberts both reached the finals of the English Schools this year and have posted PB’s all the way through the season. Jacob stands at the top of the North West Rankings (4kg) and number nine nationally. Rebecca is in first place in the North West in the 4kg category. Nationally she is placed 11th in the 4kg.
Both athletes competed at the National Championships at Bedford to round off an excellent season for them and their Coach – Mick Hitchon.
Jacob at his first ever National Championships – in the U15 Age Group – told the club that “My experience of Bedford nationals, well to start off with I was extremely nervous, especially when I saw all the boys from English Schools. I did my first practice throw which was really good but I knew my nerves where getting the better of me, so I signed to my dad to come from stands and try and get little closer to me. When the competition started I performed to my best ability with throw of 47,20 even though it was a metre off my PB I was pleased with that cause I got into the finals. The whole experience is brilliant and I really enjoyed myself. Whilst I was on holiday at Great Yarmouth, I carried on with my training at the local athletic club where I met John Painter who is a national coach for hammer, discuss and shot. So that was brilliant to meet him and get some tips off him”.
Whilst Rebecca said after her competiton that “Would like to say that getting into the nationals is a huge achievement for all of us! The competition in both pools was high, however not everyone preformed their best, including me, we all should be proud of ourselves! Throwers are the best group of people to be around and we all encourage each other even though we are rivals in our competition, which spurs us all on to do well”.
