Witton 5k Park Run
Two hundred and sixty three runners at the second Race of the newly organised 5k Run in Witton Park and won again by a Blackburn Harrier – Tim Raynes in 16.55. With Karl Billington winning the first Race can another Blackburn Harrier make it three in a row at Race 3?

A number of Blackburn Harriers turned out with some first timers. among them. Dominic Mahoney was one of those and seems to be making a return to racing with his second race in a week coming 6th in his latest outing in a time of 19.08. Joanne Nelson (runs for the Harriers on the Track) placed 8th in 19.28 followed by U17 Nick Smith – another First Timer – in 9th (19.39).
Great to see Sarah Ridehalgh back running too in 17th (20.29) followed by U13 Amy Davies (18th) in 20.50 which was a new PB; Mark Almond (19th) in 20.52; Carly Edwards in 24th (21.40) and Richard Taylor 26th with a time of (21.56).
Kaylie Panaro was next home in 35th (23.02) with Charlotte Atkinson coming in 56th (24.30), David Billington 84th in 26.43 and a new PB and also with a new PB – Lindsay Davies (101st) in 27.45.

Golden Ball 20 Mile Road Race
Two athletes who compete for the Harriers on the Track ran for their First Claim Clubs at the weekend in this Race with a 98 strong field. Both had good runs with Matt Lalor – in his first time over the distance – winning the race in 1hr 59.12 and Joanne Nelson coming home 8th overall and 1st Woman in 2hr.18.19 for a massive new PB by 20 minutes…just reward for her attitude and work in training.

Salford 10k
Michael Sharp was delighted with his run today getting a new PB of 43.55 (257th) which was 25 seconds better than his previous best and commented “Really happy training starting to pay off”.

In another Road Race last week Joe Monk competed in the final Race of this years Inter-Club Series – The Red Rose at Worden Park and 4.22miles in length, Joe finished a really good 5th with a time of 23.25 which was just under five and half minute miling.

Four Hundred and eighty three finishers in this Race, a Race where the second half may well be preferable to the first!!

Helen Leigh ‘fresh’ from winning the Woman’s Race at the C2C last weekend decided to run ‘The Ben’ as part of her ‘rest & recovery week’, or at least that would be the case for normal human beings – but not Helen. Finishing 7th woman and 143rd overall in a time of 2hrs 14.23 Helen was less than four minutes behind Clayton runner Garry Wilkinson and commented “Great day running the Ben Nevis race in beautiful weather and stunning scenery. Was 7th 2hrs 14 Not too shabby with last weekends efforts in my legs!”
Running with the Queen at the Braemar Gathering Hill Race
Not often that runners are watched by Royalty, but this is what happened to Blackburn Harriers Mick Toms and his daughter Sarah Toms at the weekend when they ran in a Race watched by over 16000 people and the Queen!!
Mick talked to the Club about the event which saw him place 19th in 32.46 and Sarah 67th in 42.51 and commented that he “travelled to The Braemar Gathering (Highland Games) Saturday 5th September to run the famous Braemar Hill Race and meet Sarah and the RAF Hill Running Team Pictured is Rebeccaa Metin, Sarah Toms, Mick Toms and Will Gardner. The race is 3.2 miles and 1350ft a Tough climb up a well trodden track then a free for all descent finishing back in the Games Stadium with a lap of the grass track in front of the 16,000 strong crowd including The Queen, Prince Phillip and Prince Charles. A great day of Running, Tug of War, Toss Braemar Caber, Scottish Dancing, High Leap, Sack Race, Hammer Throwing”.
